QB David Garrard Joins the Green and White

In his first three seasons as a pro, quarterback Mark Sanchez was mentored by former Jacksonville Jaguar signal-caller Mark Brunell. This week another Jaguar joined Gang Green, but does this quarterback have his eyes set on the starting job?

On Monday the New York Jets added a veteran presence to their quarterback depth chart inking nine-year pro David Garrard to a one-year deal. Garrard is expected to compete with incumbent signal-caller Mark Sanchez come training camp in July.

In 86 career games, 76 starts, Garrard completed 61.6 percent of his passes for 16,003 yards and 89 touchdowns with 54 interceptions.

During the 2007 regular season Garrard demonstrated aser-like accuracy tossing 18 touchdowns and just three interceptions. His career-high in passing yardage came in 2008 when Garrard threw for 3,620 yards. During his final season with the Jaguars, Garrard threw a career-high 23 touchdown passes and was named to his first Pro Bowl following a stellar 2009 campaign. He did not play in either 2011 or 2012 due to multiple injury issues.

Garrard brings postseason experience to New York having led the Jaguars to the playoffs during the 2005 and 2007 seasons. The Jaguars did not make it past the AFC Divisional round while Gerrard was under center, but he proved to be a serviceable and productive player when healthy.

The Miami Dolphins signed Garrard last season, but he was released before the season started due to knee problems.

The Jets had their fair of turnover issues last season and could potentially turn to Garrard if Sanchez's reckless play continues. Garrard is slated as Sanchez's main competition this offseason while Tim Tebow's status remains in limbo. Gang Green hopes signing Garrard will help ease their quarterback woes and bring leadership and a calming presence to their locker room.

Sanchez will have to make some major adjustments otherwise he will be handing the keys to offense over to Garrard when the 2013 season arrives.
