Phil Taylor tore pectoral

Cleveland Browns starting defensive tackle Phil Taylor tore his left pectoral muscle, coach Pat Shurmur announced. A magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed the damage and Taylor will undergo surgery in the middle of next week.

"Phil tore his left pec, most likely he's going to have surgery here in the middle of the week," Shurmur said in remarks distributed by the team. "He is going to miss some significant amount of time, more months than weeks. It's too early to speculate how long that will be.

"He was weightlifting in the offseason program and it was just one of those things that happens. It's unfortunate. We feel bad for Phil, but he is in good spirits and he is going to come back from this thing stronger than ever." Taylor started every game as a rookie last season after being drafted in the first round out of Baylor.

Shurmur didn't rule out the possibility that Taylor might miss the season.

"Could be, but I don't know that," Shurmur said. "It's too early to say right now in terms of the recovery. Everyone recovers at a different rate. Our guess is that he will be a fast healer, but he will require surgery."
