Dropping of Frostee Rucker tells us Horton/FO are moving quickly to get the players that he wants to mold his front. Big guys have to run so the prototypical 4-3 end is out. Frostee was not beefy enough to take up two blockers and not fast/flexible enough to alternately get after the QB or drop into coverage. The "edge-setting, run-stopping" end is no longer a fit. I took a gander at the AZ front and look at the size of those boys. All DL types are over 290.
He kept seven "bigs" on his DL last season including those at the DE position. We probably have 3 who fit the job description currently of quick and big. That would be Taylor, Rubin, and Winn. If they drop a few lbs, they could be even more ideal. He also employed some simply bigs. These would be jobs for Hughes and Kitchen. So we could be looking at a starting front of Taylor and Rubin at DE and Hughes in the middle. Winn could be rotational at DE and Kitchen at NT. So in this scheme we only really need one more rotational DT. A guy like Sanford/Nick Eason, or a draft pick. At these positions, the cupboard was pretty stocked and must make Horton hear a Holla.
The question then becomes the LB-type positions. If Gocong is healthy, one OLB is solved. If Sheard can play OLB the other is solved. Interesting to see if Parker may fit as a situation pass rusher. We probably need to bring in the best two of these guys we can find via FA or draft. English and Stephens have a long row to hoe. What he wants is Quentin Groves types. Ohh... just so happens he is available . Think he wants to play for his old coach? We are good at ILB. D'Qwell is just fine and JMJ, Robertson and Fort can all play a bit. If a second tackling stud falls into our laps though, we shouldn't hesitate.
Last but not least, as in the good book the last shall come first. With our first choice in this draft, we will be getting the best and most physical cover CB we can get our paws on. Write it down. If you want to gamble with multiple fronts, you better be able to cover. If we do something crazy like go for OLB/DE with the first pick instead of get a vet in FA, then we get the best CB available in round 3. Also I am Honey Badger fan. Let whomever of us who didn't smoke some weed in their day cast the first stone. Mathieu in Round 4!!!
