The Chicago Bears agreed to terms with free agent TE Michael Gaines on
a one-year contract, the team announced on Monday.
Since entering the NFL in 2004 as a seventh round draft pick (232nd overall)
with Carolina, Gaines has 79 receptions for 810 yards and five touchdowns with
the Panthers (2004-06), Buffalo Bills (2007) and Detroit Lions (2008) in 73
contests (41 starts). Last season, Gaines had 23 receptions for a career-high
260 yards and a touchdown in 16 games (six starts) with the Lions.
Gaines is known primarily as a blocking tight end and the Bears now have five
tight ends under contract. Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen are
expected to see the majority of snaps at the position again this season with
Gaines and second-year pro Kellen Davis pushing for the No. 3 role.
