Cleveland Browns Career: 1981-1989
Bio:
Drafted in the seventh-round of the 1981 draft, linebacker Eddie Johnson
ended up playing his entire 10-year NFL career with the Browns.
Known as "The Assassin" for his hard hitting and bone-jarring tackles Johnson
joined a 3-4 defense with starters Charlie Hall, Robert L. Jackson, Dick Ambrose
and Clay Matthews. Johnson broke into the starting lineup on a full-time basis
in 1984 and held down one of the two inside linebacking spots through the 1988
season.
The undersized Johnson played for Sam Rutigliano, Marty Schottenheimer, Bud
Carson and Jim Shofner in his tenure with the Browns and held off challenges
from the Browns' first-round pick in 1982 Chip Banks, as well as, the infamous
number one draft choices in 1987 and 1988, Mike Junkin and Clifford Charlton.
Very proud that he spent his entire career with the Browns, Johnson was one of
the most popular Browns players of the 1980's. He continued his relationship
with Browns fans contributing the Bernie's Insiders to answer fan questions and
write articles for the publication.
Eddie Johnson, lost his life after a nearly three-year battle with colon cancer
at the age of 43. He will be remembered by all who know him as a great Browns
player, but an even greater person.
