| Biography: |
| A fourth round pick by the Browns, a lot of people considered Kevin Bentley only the third best linebacker on a suspect Northwestern defense. Playing outside linebacker in the shadow of Napolean Harris and Billy Silva, Bentley nonetheless built a reputation for tough and spirted play. A stellar showing at the NFL Combine (not to mention an eye-opening performance in the Blue-Gray game) helped raise Bentley's stock. Seeing a fiery player with almost certain value on special teams, coach Butch Davis made the smallish (6' 0") rookie the first of three LBs taken in the Browns' 2002 draft.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the bunko squad. Bentley has absolutely shined in training camp and preseason action. While fellow rookie LBs Andra Davis and Ben Taylor have both had their moments, Bentley has been making an impact. In fact, Bentley earned the Maurice Bassett Award, given annually by Cleveland area sports writers to the rookie who shows the most outstanding work ethic and dedication during training camp. It is a distinction he shares with Anthony Henry--and we all know how well Henry's rookie campaign turned out.
Working on the weakside behind the speedy Dwayne Rudd, Bentley will see most of his action on special teams early in the season. But given how Rudd wore down as the season wore on, figure on Bentley getting plenty of action later in the fall. Bentley is also getting some looks at Jamir Miller's former "rover" position on passing downs.
