Biography:
Mark Word has bounced between several NFL teams before finding a tenuous home in Cleveland. Word was originally signed as a free agent by Kansas City in 1999 and stayed with the team until August 2000. After missing the 2000 season, Word was signed by the St. Louis Rams in February 2001, spent some time in NFL Europe, and was waived by the Rams in July 2001. Two weeks later, Word was signed by the Browns.

Word spent the entire 2001 season on the Browns injured reserve list after injuring his shoulder in training camp.

Word's first major opportunity came with the Browns in 2002, as he was given an opportunity to start after both Courtney Brown and Tyrone Rogers suffered injuries. Word had survived training camp due to an injury probably third-string DE Felipe Claybrooks. Rising to the opportunity against the Cincinnati Bengals, Word recorded three sacks which were instrumental in the Browns win.
