| When the Browns signed Orpheus Roye as a free agent from Pittsburgh in 2000, the expectation was that he would anchor the interior defensive line. But 2000 was a tough year for the sixth year lineman. Teams piled up big yards against the Cleveland front four. So Roye bulked up to 315 pounds in the offseason, hoping to provide better push against stout offensive guards. Instead, Mark Smith beat Roye out of the starting tackle spot, and the coaching staff shifted Roye back to end as a reserve. In what can only be described as a shining 'Jenny Craig moment', Roye shed 25 pounds in about three weeks. And when Courtney Brown went out with a knee injury in the final preseason game, Roye found himself back in the starting mix at defensive end. |
