| Biography: |
| Phil Dawson is an accurate and composed kicker who emerged last year as one of the most consistent field goal kickers in the league. Unfortunately, Dawson lacks leg strength and tends to struggle with field goals more than 40 yards out. That lack of range will make for some hard choices in 2002. Browns coaches will find themselves having to punt or attempt a fourth down conversion in situations where other teams can put points on the board. Still, fans can rest easy knowing those 35 yard field goals are automatic.
Dawson's performance as placekicker is a greater source of concern. His kickoffs are short--often being caught at the 10 or even 15 yard line--and lack hang time. The combination creates all sorts of opportunites for the return team, and typically leaves the defense with a short field to defend. Last year, opposing offenses often found themselves starting drives at the 30 or even 35 yard line. Still, the front office values Dawson's consistency enough to sign him to a four-year deal in the offseason. |
