The consensus junior All-American tackle led the Cardinal of Dennis Green to an 8-3 record and a Bowl bid in his final season at Stanford. A starter for three seasons, Whitfield was a two-time finalist for the Vince Lombardi Award and also a nominee for the Outland Trophy as the best lineman in college football. During his final season, the 290-pounder bulldozed holes for "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell, helping Stanford post big victories over top 20 teams like Colorado and UCLA, while the offense averaged almost 400 yards and 32 points a game.
