Matt Mauck, coming off one of the finest seasons in Louisiana State University history, was Denver’s first of three seventh-round selections (225th overall) in the 2004 NFL Draft. Combining his great skills on the football field with his excellence in the classroom, Mauck was one of the top quarterbacks in this past year’s draft. In 23 career games (20 starts) at LSU, he completed 310-of-529 passes (58.6) for 3,813 yards with 35 touchdowns and 21 interceptions. Among the many accolades earned in his collegiate career, Mauck’s crowning jewel came his senior year as he helped guide the Tigers to a share of the National Title, LSU’s first since 1958. In two seasons as a starting quarterback, he led the Tigers to an 18-2 overall record, and his .900 winning percentage is the best for a quarterback in school history. He leaves LSU third in school history in touchdown passes (37) and completion percentage (58.6), sixth in completions (310), seventh in attempts (529) and eighth in passing yards (3,831). Mauck also shined in the classroom, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and earned second-team Academic All-American honors in 2003.

2003: Mauck returned from a season-ending injury suffered during his junior year in impressive fashion, leading LSU to a school-record 13 wins and a share of the national title, a first for the Tigers in football since 1958. An All-Southeastern Conference selection (Associated Press and by league’s coaches) and a second-team Academic All-American (CoSIDA), Mauck threw for 2,825 yards on 229 of 358 passing (64.0) and set a school record with 28 touchdowns. He led the SEC in pass efficiency and threw at least one touchdown pass in all but two games for the Tigers in 2003. On the ground, Mauck rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown on 79 carries (1.2). Mauck opened the season against Louisiana-Monroe with three touchdown passes, including two to wide receiver Michael Clayton, and finished with 153 passing yards on 13 of 28 attempts. Over the span of the next two weeks, he set a school record by completing 17 concesutive passes. Against Arizona, Mauck hit on his final 10 passes, finishing the day 10-of-11 for 150 yards and a touchdown, then completed his first seven against Western Illinois. In that game, he posted 305 yards, hit on 23-of-32 attempts, and also tied a school record with four touchdown passes. Against South Carolina, Mauck threw for 199 yards by completing 24-of-30 throws and two scores, then followed that with three touchdowns passes while connecting on 17 of 28 attempts for 224 yards vs. Auburn. Mauck posted four more touchdown passes vs. Louisiana Tech, and ended the day with 311 yards on 18-of-20 throws (90.0). In the Tigers’ game vs. Alabama, he completed 24-of-36 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns, including a 23-yarder to Clayton. Mauck enjoyed one of his finest games of the season against Arkansas, connecting on 12-of-19 attempts for 186 yards and four touchdowns, earning him SEC Offensive Player of the Week and National Player of the Week by the Sporting News honors. In the SEC Championship against Georgia, Mauck hit 14-of-22 passes for 151 yards and a 43-yard touchdown to Clayton, adding 21 yards on 8 rushes. He closed out an undefeted, National Championship season by helping LSU knock off Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, where he threw for 124 yards |
