Antonio is an electrifying open field runner who set school, conference and NCAA records as a punt returner during his career. His 277 yards on punt returns vs. UCLA in 2003 set an NCAA Division 1-A game record and his eight touchdowns scored on punt returns during his career tied the NCAA record first set by Wes Welker on Texas Tech (2000-03). Perkins was a consensus All-State selection and a member of The Daily Oklahoman’s Blue-Chip List as a senior at Lawton (Okla.) High School. He added District and Area Offensive Player of the Year honors after finishing fifth in Class 6A ranks with 44 catches for 951 yards and sixteen touchdowns as a senior. He led the squad to 23-2 record in his final two years, including an 11-1 mark as a senior. He also averaged 20.5 yards and scored three touchdowns (two in one game) on 20 punt returns, returned one kickoff for a touchdown and made over 90 receptions during his prep career. The trumpet and baritone player redshirted as a freshman in 2000 at Oklahoma. He earned Academic All-Big Twelve Conference honors in 2001, adding Freshman All-American honors from The Sporting News, as he intercepted three passes, deflected four others and recorded 15 tackles (12 solos) as a reserve cornerback. Perkins followed with All-Big Twelve second-team honors in 2002, when he had an outstanding season as a punt returner and cornerback. Antonio recorded 26 tackles (17 solos) with seven pass deflections and four interceptions. He set a school season-record with 643 yards and three touchdowns on 43 punt returns (15.0 avg) and added 207 yards on 12 kickoff returns (17.2 avg). Antonio surpassed those totals in 2003, as he was a consensus All-American choice. He finished with 51 tackles (41 solos, three interceptions and five pass deflections and set NCAA records for most punts returned for touchdowns in a game (three) and season (four) and most yards gained on punt returns (277 vs. UCLA). He totaled 642 yards on 53 punt returns (12.1 avg), 13 yards on three pass thefts and 112 yards on eight kickoff returns (14.0 avg) during his junior campaign. Primed for another banner season he finished with 33 tackles (22 solos), a sack, an interception and a pass deflection on defense. Perkins also gained 156 yards and a score on 17 punt returns (9.2 avg). In 47 games with the Sooners, Antonio started thirty times. He finished with 125 tackles (92 solos), a 7-yard sack, five stops for losses of 14 yards, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 21 pass deflections. He set school career-records with 113 punt returns for 1441 yards (12.8 avg) and eight touchdowns, gained 319 more yards on twenty kickoff returns (16.0 avg) and 150 yards with a score on eleven interceptions. He also set team conditioning records with a 4.31 clocking in the 40-yard dash and a 42-inch vertical jump. |
