| Biography: |
It was little surprise to see the Vikings draft a defensive back in the fourth round in 2002. Mike Tice said as much after the first day of the draft. The question at the time was: Where would Williams end up in the defensive backfield?
By the middle of the 2002 season he had answered that question when he became a starter at cornerback and Corey Chavous moved to safety.
2004: Started every game opposite Antoine Winfield, registering a career-high 92 tackles, including five for losses, 16 passes broken up, two forced fumbles and two interceptions. Started 40 of his 49 career games. Started every game in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, including the playoffs.
2003: Made 15 of his 16 starts at right cornerback, with one coming at left cornerback. Tied a single-game record with three interceptions against Detroit on Nov. 2, the first Viking to do that since 1995. Finished season with 80 tackles, five interceptions, 20 passes defensed, seven QB hurries and 13 special teams tackles.
2002: Started seven games at left cornerback and played in all 16. Had 44 tackles, one interception and 12 passes broken up. Also had 12 tackles on special teams while getting the attention of the coaching staff. Spent most of the spring and summer working at cornerback despite talk of maybe eventually giving him a try at safety.
College: Began career with North Carolina State as a reserve free safety in 1998 and started at safety in 1999. Led the team in tackles in his sophomore season, making 131 tackles. Moved from safety to right cornerback in 2000, starting every game and registering 55 tackles. He had 63 tackles from cornerback in his senior season. Sociology major.
The book on Williams out of college said he has a big upper body and is instinctive and quick to react. He is also solid at helping in run support. He ran a 4.57 in the 40-yard dash, had a 39-inch vertical jump and did 19 reps bench pressing 225 pounds.
