| When Dave Campo took over the reins for the Dallas Cowboys, he was in a special group. Only three other head coaches had been involved with three Super Bowl winners. Since their names were Mike Shanahan, Mike Holmgren, and Bill Belichick, Campo seemed close to a sure thing as a new head coach. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out quite that way.
Campo was relieved of his duties as Cowboy Head Coach on 12/30/02, after compiling three consecutive 5-11 seasons for Jerry Jones' club. The parting was difficult to be sure, as Campo had spent 14 years in the Cowboys organization as a defensive assistant, secondary coach, and defensive coordinator before taking the top job.
Before starting with the Cowboys, Campo had one of those long lists of coaching jobs found in those who have worked their ways up through the ranks. Campo gradually worked his way up through the NCAA food chain, starting at Central Connecticut, and going to to Albany State (1973), Bridgeport (1974), Pittsburgh (1975), Washington State (1976), Boise State (1977-79), Oregon State (1980), Weber State (1981-82), Iowa State (1983), Syracuse (1984-86), and Miami (1987-88). |
