Kellen Winslow Jr. stole the show in the afternoon practice on the opening
day of minicamp Friday. Winslow gathered in a short pass from Charlie Frye in a
seven-on-seven drill and raced untouched to the goal line. Someone from the
sideline yelled "Dunk it, Kellen!" and Winslow obliged by jumping and getting
vertical enough to slam the football over the crossbar. It brought a cheer from
his teammates.
Should Winslow have been more cautious as he recovers from knee surgery? Give
him a break. The surgery was more than a year ago, and it isn't like he jumped
on a motorcycle again.
Up and Down Friz
Frisman Jackson is in mid training camp form. That means he'll drop a pass
that hits him in the hands and then catch one he has to stretch and twist to
grab. It is exactly what he did in the afternoon practice.
Coach Romeo Crennel is looking for a receiver to step up. Jackson could be
that guy, but drops like he had Friday have to make Crennel wonder.
Joshua Cribbs dropped a couple that hit him in the hands. The most consistent
player among the lesser-knowns was Brandon Rideau.
On that note, anyone attending training camp this summer will be in for a
treat when they watch Joe Jurevicius. He sets an example of how to practice when
he steps onto the field. He's all business and, yes, he definitely knows how to
catch the football.
Quick move
Rookie inside Leon Williams broke up a pass intended for tight end Darnell Dinkins. Williams was behind Dinkins and managed to swat the ball away without
getting an interference call.
The glass cliché
This is really one of those glass half full/half empty tidbits. Toward the
end of practice Andra Davis jumped over from his inside linebacker spot to make
an interception. That's the half-full part.
The half-empty part of the play? Ken Dorsey, trying to convince the coaches
he should be Frye's backup, threw the pass.
