The Cleveland Browns today elevated running back Thomas Brown to the 53-man roster from the practice squad, the club announced. In addition, the team placed linebacker David Veikune on injured reserve and released defensive back Joe Porter off the practice squad.
Thomas Brown has spent the past seven weeks on the Browns’ practice squad after being signed on November 10. Originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round (172nd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft, he spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve before being waived by the Falcons on September 5, 2009. He rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts (4.8 avg.), caught three passes for 18 yards and returned nine kickoffs for a 21.0-yard average in preseason with the team in 2008. He rushed for 57 yards on 24 carries, caught two passes for 22 yards and brought back seven kickoffs for a 20.9-yard average during the 2009 preseason schedule with the Falcons. A four-year letterman at the University of Georgia (2004-07), Brown ranks fifth in Bulldogs history with 2,646 rushing yards. He also recorded 23 rushing touchdowns. Born on May 15, 1986, the 5-8, 200-pounder attended Tucker (Ga.) High School.
He will wear uniform number 29.
