Browns Confirm Holmgren Interest

Posted Dec 17, 2009

A Browns' official discusses the Holmgren 'situation' as it pertains to Cleveland, also offers up a 'clue' as to which direction this may be headed...

The deal is not done with Mike Holmgren.

And it’s not dead, either.

That’s the word from Browns vice president of communications Bill Bonsiewicz as he stopped into the Dino Lucarelli Media Room at Browns Headquarters just before 10:30 Thursday morning to provide an update on the team’s conversations with the former Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks head coach to become the club’s “football czar” to run the football end of the organization.

Bonsiewicz said Browns executives, including team owner Randy Lerner, met with Holmgren “for several days” in Cleveland and that he left for home Wednesday.

He called the meeting and the discussions “productive” and said that both sides agreed to talk again “in the next several days. He said money was not discussed.

Bonsiewicz would not comment on a timeline to hire Holmgren or whomever. He also did not want to talk about any other specifics, such as interviewing other candidates, how the new power structure might be set up, or Lerner’s reaction to the meetings.

He did say, however, that the Browns did talk to the NFL office about clarification on the so-called “Rooney Rule,” which requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate for any head coaching or high-echelon front-office position.

That may be the tip-off that the Browns are very interested in Holmgren and are trying to get their ducks in a row, so to speak, to move on him quickly before someone else nabs him.
