The Browns hoped to deal down to get more picks, and did just that, as draft day gets off to a rollicking start in Cleveland. Follow our breaking news updates on Twitter at!

Berea—The Browns were able to make the trade that is often talked about.

That is to trade down out of the top five picks.

The trade with the Jets saved the Browns a lot of money on their first draft choice. If nothing changes, the Browns will have the 17th pick, instead of the fifth pick. Taking advantage of the Jets wanting to draft Mark Sanchez, the Browns were able to add another second-round draft choice (52nd overall) in this year’s draft, along with three players Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam and Brett Ratliff.

The Browns tried to sign Elam as a restricted free agent, but the Jets matched the offer. The Kent State product is expected to be a favorite to start opposite of Brodney Pool at safety, while Coleman might be a strong candidate to start at defensive end.

So you thought the Browns had enough former Jets?

After signing four former Jets during free agency, the Browns now have seven with the addition of Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam and Brett Ratliff in the trade of first-round picks.

Coleman (6-5, 295 pounds) played three seasons with the Jets after signing as an unrestricted free agent from Cowboys in 2007. He had 83 tackles to lead defensive ends in tackles in 2007 and added 53 tackles last season.

Elam (6-0, 207 pounds) played three seasons with the Jets and played in all 16 games last season with nine starts. He finished the season with 56 tackles, two sacks, one interception, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and 11 special teams tackles.

Ratliff (6-4, 224 pounds) is in his third season after signing as an undrafted free agent from Utah. He knows Eric Mangini’s offense and is expected to be the third quarterback.
