A Comeback Cut Short
Gary Baxter

Posted Aug 9, 2008

One of the most inspirational stories in recent memory has come to an unceremonious end as the Browns have cut ties with veteran corner Gary Baxter.

The sight of Gary Baxter on the field during training camp brought a standing ovation from the fans and high praise and inspiration from his teammates.

Unfortunately for Baxter and the Cleveland Browns, that was the high point of the cornerback's return as, four days after surgery to remove cartilage in one of his surgically repaired knees, the organization has announced that they have terminated the veteran's contract.

Baxter suffered torn patellar tendons in both knees on Oct. 22, 2006 against the Broncos and has not played in a game since.  He was attempting what was widely regarded as an unprecedented -- and unlikely -- comeback from the devastating dual injuries.

While Baxter's career with the Browns has come to an end for the moment, the organization did not preclude a reunion at some point down the road.

"“Last year we were able to hold a roster spot open for Gary as he attempted to make a monumental comeback,” said Phil Savage, Cleveland Browns Senior Vice President and General Manager. in the club's press release.

“After he underwent a knee scope last week, we are unfortunately not in a position to hold a roster spot this year. We are releasing Gary today in hopes he will be able to continue his rehab and get back into the NFL, either with another team, or possibly with the Browns. Gary has made tremendous strides thus far and we believe he can play professional football again in the future.”
