A quality nose tackle is the foundation of the 3-4 defense, and the Cleveland Browns may finally have one. Romeo Crennel knows Shaun Rogers' potential, and likes what he sees from his team's new acquired man in the middle...

BEREA - Romeo Crennel is very excited to have Shaun Rogers on board.

But what defensive coach wouldn’t want a behemoth 6-4” 350 pound run stopper. Rogers was acquired in the off-season for a third-round draft choice and Leigh Bodden to help beef up the Browns weak run defense.

“I think Shaun has come in and he’s done a very good job of acclimating to this team and to the community,” Crennel said.

Rogers had been a Pro Bowl player with the Lions but the feeling was he wasn’t playing up to his potential.

“Sometimes, when you go to a new place it’s a different scenery and I think that’s been good for him,” Crennel said. “He is not the sole focus of the attention on this team. We have a lot of good players and I think he feels good about just being part of the team and trying to make a contribution and do what he can to help the team.”

Crennel said he hasn’t been a distraction, but rather a positive influence.

“Since he’s been here, he’s helped out the players,” he said. “There haven’t been any problems. We’re excited about the progress he’s made, he’s still learning our system, but I think he has enough ability that he’ll be able to help us and help the defense be productive.”

Rogers is just 29 and he is being counted upon to solidify the defensive line. In a scrimmage last week Rogers tipped a pass from Brady Quinn to himself and rambled downfield with the interception. Last year, he picked a pass off from the interior line and returned it 66 yards for a touchdown against the Broncos.

17 Rests: WR Braylon Edwards was given the afternoon session off. WR Travis Wilson ran with the first team and made some nice catches to further solidify his chances of being the No. 3 or 4 receiver this year.

QB Update: Crennel gave his thoughts on the play of the Browns top two quarterbacks on Wednesday morning. It wasn’t too glowing.

On Brady Quinn:

“He hasn’t been as smooth as I think he wants to be,” Crennel said. “I think he’s having fun. Sometimes, he tries to make plays down the field when in a different situation he might make a different choice.

“ I know that he works hard,” he said. “Things are going to smooth out for him and things will be less erratic for him so to speak. He’s taking the opportunity to try to make plays downfield that last year he would not make. Last year, he would just take what the defense gave him. I think he has better command of the offense and he’s trying to anticipate when he can make a play down the field.”

On Anderson:

“He’s got things he needs to improve on also,” Crennel said. “He’s not as smooth as he needs to be.”

Crennel was asked if Quinn gets to work with the starting unit for timing.

“We try to rotate it and guys have been in and out mixing it up a little bit,” he said. “If it works out Brady gets more time with the ones, it just happens.”

Peek and Smith Sit: LB Antween Peek and DL Shaun Smith sat out the practices with knee injuries.

“Their knees are a little sore, so we’ll rehab them and work with them and get them back in there in a day or two,” Crennel said.
