Texans Sign Chaun Thompson
Chaun Thompson

The once-promising Browns career of Chaun Thompson is headed south...

Another free agent linebacker prospect for the Browns is headed elsewhere, but this time it hits close to home.

The Houston Chronicle reported earlier this afternoon that the Texans had signed Thompson to a two-year deal worth $2.4 million, including a $650,000 signing bonus.

Thompson was once the fast-rising phenom coveted by multiple teams during the 2003 draft. A little-known prospect out of West Texas A&M, Thompson gained notoriety quickly during the run-up to the draft, due to his impressive measurables, if not his experience for the winless small-school program.

During his career in Cleveland, Thompson worked hard to make the huge leap to professional football. He wasn't helped by a seemingly yearly change of position and role, as he moved inside and outside, first playing in a 4-3 scheme and later adjusting to Romeo Crennel's 3-4.

Along with a fresh start in Houston, Thompson may have a shot a larger role, and will be able to play in his home state of Texas.
