With the free-agency signing period entering its third week, depth at cornerback remains an area of concern for the Cleveland Browns. But, as The Orange & Brown Report has learned, the club is in the process of attempting to rectify that situation.
The agent for cornerback Chris Carr, Buddy Baker, tells The OBR that he has “talked numbers” with, and received an offer from, the Browns. Baker refused to discuss the parameters of the deal, but did admit that the Browns have yet to formally submit an offer sheet to his client.
Carr, a restricted free agent from Oakland, visited and worked out for the Browns in the middle of last week.
”He had a very good visit with the Browns, and obviously they have an interest in him,” Baker told The OBR earlier this morning.
The three-year veteran has also visited with the Panthers and one other club whose name Baker refused to divulge. League sources tell the OBR that the other team was likely the Tennessee Titans. Additionally, Baker said, he’s talked contract with “multiple teams” but that there are no additional visits scheduled for his client at this time.
Currently, Carr is sifting through the various offers he’s received and Baker expects the corner to make a decision on his 2008 home “in the next week or two”.
Carr, who was given a tender by the Raiders which would not require draft-pick compensation if he were to sign an offer sheet, is strictly a nickel or dime back at this point in his career, but does have value as a special teams player. During his senior season at Boise State, the 5-10, 180-pounder averaged 19.8 yards on 22 punt returns.
In the NFL, Carr has averaged less than six yards on 77 career returns, but does carry a respectable 24-yard average on kickoffs. The majority of Carr’s team-leading 28 special teams tackles last season came as a gunner on the punt coverage unit.
He has one career interception, which he returned 100 yards for a touchdown in 2006.
