In 2006, the Cleveland Browns were in hot pursuit of Kalimba Edwards to be their rush linebacker. Now, following Edwards’ release from the Lions earlier today, that chase is on the verge of being renewed.
Within the last hour, two sources have told The Orange & Brown Report the interest that was there in ’06 remains on both sides.
A Browns source told The OBR that while the club has yet to contact Edwards’ representation, they are expected to do so “within the next 24 hours, probably”. A source close to Edwards confirmed that there had been no contact between the two sides “as of yet”, but fully expected to “hear from the organization at some point in the near future.”
A message left for Edwards’ agent has not been returned.
At the start of free agency in March of 2006, the Browns were considered the favorite to land the former second-round draft pick; in fact, various print and broadcast outlets at the time prematurely reported Edwards had inked a deal with Cleveland.
However, following a take-it-or-leave-it deadline imposed by the Browns, the Lions upped their offer and Edwards returned to the Motor City. At that time, the Browns turned their attention to Willie McGinest, who ultimately inked a three-year deal with the club.
Edwards, the 35th pick of the 2002 draft, has played almost exclusively at defensive end in the Lions’ 4-3 scheme. During and after their pursuit of Edwards in ’06, the Browns made it clear that the now 28-year-old would be moved to outside linebacker in their 3-4 scheme. That would likely be the case again if he were to be signed.
