LaBoy Signs with the Cardinals

The Cleveland Browns continue to look to strengthen their front seven, and the OBR has the latest on how the negotiations are going with free agent DE/OLB Travis LaBoy. Get the scoop!

UPDATE: Per Adam Caplan in Ask the Insiders, LaBoy has signed a multi-year deal with the Cardinals that includes $8 million up front.

According to a league source, free agent defensive end Travis LaBoy (Tennessee) and his agent are mulling over three options for the lineman's future.

LaBoy visited with the Cleveland Browns over the weekend and participated in extensive contract discussions. While LaBoy and the Browns were in discussions, his former team, the Tennessee Titans, continue to lurk as a possibility for the defensive end.

While discussions with the Browns appeared to have taken a positive turn early in the weekend, both sides have been unable to close the deal. As our source notes, the Browns have been unwilling to offer up the guaranteed compensation and signing bonus LaBoy's camp has been steadfast in requiring.

While parameters of a deal with Cleveland are believed to be in place, but the structure of the offer is a sticking point, according to the source.

Another sticking point is how LaBoy would be utilized in Cleveland. In discussions, it's believed that LaBoy has been informed that he would not just be exclusively an outside linebacker, but a situational pass rusher. There's no commitment to a starting role.

The Arizona Cardinals have also had discussions with LaBoy and are believed to have entered into negotiations. In that case, however, a starting role as an outside linebacker and standup pass rusher are being promised to the free agent.

Negotiations are ongoing, so it's possible that a deal with the Browns could be agreed to at any time... or never.
