Kellen Winslow is slowly putting himself into the level of elite players in the league.
Winslow played last season on a knee that needed microfracture surgery. He came back full strength this training camp, and has been outstanding through four games.
Winslow leads the Browns with 20 receptions for 367 yards and a touchdown. Included are several big plays, including a 25-yard catch on third down to set up a touchdown and a 49-yard reception that included a long run after the catch.
Winslow played the game, too, after a shoulder subluxation had him limited throughout the week in practice.
The injury almost kept Winslow from playing, but he insisted. And he provided a spark and leadership by example.
"He's a competitor," coach Romeo Crennel said.
To say the least.
REPORT CARD VS. RAVENS
PASSING OFFENSE: B -- The Browns did not have huge numbers, but they were effective. Derek Anderson threw for 204 yards with one interception and another that could have been returned for a touchdown. But Kellen Winslow and Braylon Edwards combined for 193 of those yards and provided several big plays -- including a 78-yard touchdown to Edwards that gave the Browns a 14-0 lead.
RUSHING OFFENSE: C -- The Browns did not total a lot of yards, with Jamal Lewis and Jason Wright combining for 91 yards. But they were effective yards, as Lewis broke a 28-yard run and Wright a 15-yarder when the game was in doubt early.
PASS DEFENSE: C -- Kind of hard to give this grade when the opposing quarterback -- Steve McNair -- sets career highs for attempts and completions. But the Browns forced the Ravens to go the long way on their drives, and when Cleveland was up early, it made it near impossible for the Ravens to come back.
RUSH DEFENSE: D -- For the fourth game in a row, the Browns allowed a back to run for 100 yards. This time it was Willis McGahee, who averaged more than seven yards per carry. The yards didn't matter a lot because the Browns were ahead early, but until something changes, the run defense will be a concern all season.
SPECIAL TEAMS: A -- Joshua Cribbs continues to be a huge asset to the Browns. His 41-yard return of the opening kickoff set up a first-drive touchdown, and continued to give the offense a huge spark. Meanwhile, Scott Player, signed two games ago, continues to fill in well for the injured Dave Zastudil. Player averages 40 yards per punt.
COACHING: A -- Hard to argue with a win, but the signs for the Browns are finally starting to be positive. For the previous two years, players had said they believed in Romeo Crennel but they didn't play like it. Now they are playing like it, and there is finally some hope for the future. Crennel, a gentleman and a good man, is finally getting some deserved results.
