Orpheus Roye is going to have surgery to clean out loose cartilage in his right knee Thursday morning. The Browns are keeping their fingers crossed he will be ready for the season opener against the Steelers.
In the meantime, several players are being used at left defensive end, including Shaun Smith, Orien Harris, J'Vonne Parker and Simon Fraser.
"Orpheus had some clicking in his knee," Coach Romeo Crennel said. "The doctor took a look at it and we're going to clean that out because it bears more weight. We're going to get him back out here as soon as we can."
Roye, 34, missed seven games last year - five of them with a knee injury.
