Five Browns Kick off NFL Europe Season

The Browns have a number of youngsters stationed across the Atlantic. Here is the team's press release on the subject.

 

The NFL Europa season kicks off its 15th season on Saturday, April 14th and several players will represent the Cleveland Browns. Six teams will compete in a 10-game regular season schedule followed by the Yello Strom World Bowl XV on June 23 at Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt, Germany.

Berlin Thunder: RB Chris Barclay and WR Steve Sanders
Frankfurt Galaxy: P Kyle Basler
Amsterdam Admirals: DT Alvin Smith
Cologne Centurions: LB Clifton Smith

NFL Europa Games -- Week 1 (April 14th)

Cologne Centurions vs. Hamburg Sea Devils – Saturday, April 14 – 6:00 p.m.
Amsterdam Admirals vs. Frankfurt Galaxy – Saturday, April 14 – 7:00 p.m.
Berlin Thunder at Rhein Fire – Saturday, April 14 – 7:00 p.m. 

NFL Network will televise three games in each of the 10 regular season weeks concluding with the Yello Storm World Bowl.


Berlin
Thunder (0-0) RB Chris Barclay and WR Steve Sanders:

RB Chris Barclay will look to receive significant playing time with the Berlin Thunder. As the fifth-leading rusher in ACC history, Barclay will be able to showcase his speed in Week 1 against the Rhein Fire on April 14.

With the Browns: Barclay signed as an undrafted free agent by Cleveland on May 4, 2006. He spent the 2006 season on Cleveland’s practice squad, and was signed to the active roster on Dec. 19, and made his NFL debut vs. Tampa Bay on Dec. 24.  He was allocated to NFL Europa on February 6, 2007.

WR Steve Sanders finished seventh all-time at Bowling Green school history with 156 receptions and 2,324 receiving yards and fourth in touchdowns with 24.

With the Browns: Sanders signed as an undrafted free agent by Cleveland on May 4, 2006. He was waived before the start of the season, however was signed on December 27, 2006 and spent one week on the practice squad. Sanders was re-signed by the Browns as a reserve/future free agent on February 6, and allocated to NFL Europa.


Frankfurt
Galaxy (0-0) P Kyle Basler

P Kyle Basler will serve as Frankfurt’s punter for the 2007 NFL Europa season. Basler was a four-year letter winner and walk-on at Washington State. He played in 48 games and set a school record with 255 career punts for 10,794 yards (42.3 avg.)

With the Browns: Basler was originally signed by Cleveland as an undrafted free agent on May 4, 2006. He was with the Browns in training camp and was waived on August 28, 2006. He was re-signed by the Browns as a reserve/future free agent on February 6, and allocated to NFL Europa.


Amsterdam
Admirals (0-0) DT Alvin Smith

DT Alvin Smith joins the Amsterdam Admirals on the defensive line. Smith was an honorable mention All-Pac 10 choice following his senior season at Oregon State. He finished his collegiate career with 55 tackles, 5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.

With the Browns: Smith was signed to the Cleveland practice squad on November 28, 2006 and re-signed with the Browns on January 10, 2007. He was allocated to NFL Europa on February 6, 2007.


Cologne
Centurions (0-0) LB Clifton Smith

LB Clifton Smith will spend his first season in NFL Europa as a linebacker on the Cologne Centurions. He competed with the Washington Redskins from 2003-2004 before being signed by the Browns in 2005. A graduate from Syracuse University, Smith finished his college career ranked third in school history with 36 tackles for loss.

With the Browns: Smith was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Redskins in 2003. Cleveland signed Smith to the practice squad on October 25, 2005 and was waived on September 2, 2006. He resigned with the Browns as a free agent on December 19, 2006 and was allocated to NFL Europe on February 6, 2007.
