Berea - Next Thursday can't come quickly enough for Browns rookie running back
Jerome Harrison. That's when the Browns travel to Philadelphia to open the
preseason against the Eagles.
“I can't wait to get out there and show what I can do,” Harrison said. “I want
to show what I can do and make the most of the opportunity to make plays.”
Harrison (5-9, 199 pounds) was the Browns' first choice in the fifth-round in
this year's draft out of Washington State. He rushed for over 1,900 yards last
season in college.
Harrison is expected to see some action from the line of scrimmage and also in
third down situations. He also might return kickoffs for the Browns.
He caught three nice passes during the team scrimmage time. He showed a nice
burst after catching the ball and some moves along the way.
“I just want to be on top of my game,” he said. “I want to make the most of any
opportunities I'm given and fit in wherever I can.”
Harrison is very deceptively explosive as he looks like he takes off on his
third or fourth step.
“People tell me that,” he said. “I'll just let the coaches tell me how it's
going.”
Crennel took notice.
“He kind of reminds you of some of those third down backs,” Crennel said. “We
had a guy (with the Giants) named Dave Meggett and he kind of reminds you of
him.”
Notebook
Frye Held Out: QB Charlie Frye did not run any plays during the team drills, but
he said it was just Romeo Crennel's decision. Meanwhile, QB Ken Dorsey ran
the first team.
“I just gave him the day off,” Crennel said. “I wanted to rest his arm and take
a look at some of those guys.”
QB Derek Anderson looked sharp in his time throwing the ball. He was 2-of-2 in
11-on-11 drills, while Dorsey ran with the first team and was 2-of-3. Dorsey's
passes were shorter and had some wobble to them, whereas, Anderson's balls were
downfield and much more crisp. Anderson also threw a couple of touchdowns during
the goal line drills, including a slant to WR Carlton Brewster.
Injury Update: The following were held out of practice for injuries: CB Antonio Perkins (hamstring), RB Chris Barclay (ankle) and TE John Owens (strain calf).
TE Darnell Dinkins (turned his ankle during the practice). TE Kellen Winslow and
Frye were rested.
Jones Gone: S Sean Jones will miss Friday night's scrimmage due to “personal
reasons” and will rejoin the team on Sunday according to Crennel.
Play of the Day: QB Lang Campbell threw a downfield pass to WR Travis Wilson in
drills. Wilson went up and tipped the ball over DB Chris Thompson and hauled in
the ball as he went to the ground.
“I thought it was a good play on his part,” Crennel said. “He took advantage of
his opportunity he was given. He showed some aggressiveness for the ball in
taking the ball away from the defensive back.”
New Partner: The Browns announced after splitting from WOIO 19, they are
partnering with WKYC 3 for the preseason games. In addition, Channel 3 will also
have other Browns programming throughout the season.
