Berea – The Browns started the season 9-1—even if it is just in signing their
draft choices. The Browns signed five draft choices over the weekend, including
their top pick Kamerion Wimbley.
The only unsigned draft choice as of Monday was third-round pick Travis Wilson
Wimbley held true to his word that he would be signed by the start of training
camp.
“It was very important for me to get in here on time,” Wimbley said. “I’m a
rookie and I have to pick up some more things. I think if I would’ve held out,
it would have hurt my performance this season.”
Wimbley said it was a priority to get signed, regardless of what was going on
with the other first-round picks.
“I wasn’t paying too much attention to the other rookie first-rounders,” he
said. “I talked to my agent and he told me progress was being made. I didn’t
make a directive to the agent (to be signed), but he knew I wanted to come in.
“I got the fair deal and I went ahead and signed.”
Wimbley feels he’s adjusting well to the Browns defense and the outside
linebacker position.
“All I can do is prepare the best way I can,” he said. “I just want to get
better every time I’m out there. I don’t think there’s too much difference
between what I’ll do here than what I did at Florida State.”
Wimbley said Willie McGinest has really helped him in his learning process.
“We’re watching film and the coaches say something and he’ll say this is why
we’re doing this at this time,” Wimbley said.
Wimbley is confident he’ll be able to make the transition from college to the
NFL.
“I’m up to it,” he said. “You have to be a top athlete and you have to pick
things up quickly. I think I’m adjusting pretty well and am progressing fine. I
think that is what preseason is all about and I think I’ll be fine.”
Wimbley said he feels the transition has been pretty much what he expected.
“I think there are a couple of technique things that I’m working on,” he
said. “It’s about what I expected, but so far I’m grasping it and I’m happy with
the progress that I’ve made.”
Wimbley has been compared favorably to Peter Boulware since the Browns have
drafted him.
“(Peter) has accomplished a lot of things in his career,” Wimbley said. “If I
can accomplish what he has-- minus the injuries-- that would be great.”
