Passing on Ngata Leads to Another DT

Posted Apr 30, 2006

In a strange coincidence, The Browns used the pick gained from passing on Haloti Ngata to grab another defensive tackle. In this case, they may have landed a player who - while not in Ngata's class - may help Browns fans quickly forget passing on the big nose tackle from Oregon...

Berea - Ironically, the Browns took a nose tackle with the pick they obtained in the trade with the Ravens that allowed Baltimore to select Haloti Ngata.

They selected Babatunde “Baba” Oshinowo from Stanford. The 6-1, 302 pounder had 143 tackles in his career with 15 sacks and 30 tackles for loss, including 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in 2005.

Oshinowo has played some in the 3-4, even though Stanford employed the 4-3 scheme.

“One of the things I've done as a defensive tackle is we've played the 3-4 a couple of times,” he said.

Oshinowo was listed by some publications as a first day draft choice.

“I can't tell you what happened,” he said. “On the first day I think only a few defensive linemen were drafted so teams concentrated on the other positions. I'm very excited to prove people wrong.”

Oshinowo admitted his performance at the combine might have caused his stock to drop.

“I thought I could've done better at some of the drills, but I don't think the combine was the best representative of my abilities,” he said. “I'm a football play and I'm excited to play football.”

If nothing else, Oshinowo has quite an interesting story about his name. His full name is Babatunde Oluwasegun Temitope Oluwakorede Adisa Oshinowo, Jr.

“It's a Nigerian name,” he said. “My parents are first generation immigrants. Everyone had a name for me like my aunt or grandmother and all those names get tacked on.”
