Berea – Charlie Frye threw his first touchdown for the Browns today—even
though it was only practice. Browns fans hope it is just the first of many.
The 6-4, 217 pound Willard native over came a rough few plays earlier in the
practice. He over threw a pass earlier during 7-on-7 drills and then under threw
William Green on a screen pass. He also fumbled a snap. However, he came through
during the 11-on-11 scrimmage.
On the play, Frye threaded the needle to Frisman Jackson on a 25-yard dart
between two defenders at the one-yard line and Jackson got in the end zone from
there.
“(The pattern) was an out-and-up and Frisman split the safeties,” Frye said.
Frye said he’s making progress each practice.
“I’m feeling more and more comfortable,” he said. “The speed and intensity of
the training camp practices are much more than they were during the mini camps.”
Frye feels the game is starting to slow down for him a bit.
“I’m starting to get the timing down with the receivers,” he said. “The speed
of the routes is much faster than it was in mini camp.”
Frye, who grew up a Browns fan and a big fan of Bernie Kosar, is thrilled to
be with the Browns.
“Growing up a Browns fan, how could you not be a huge Bernie Kosar fan,” he
said. “I’ve gotten to know him a little bit over the summer and it’s been a
thrill.”
Frye was asked if he has to pinch himself to actually be out on the field
wearing the seal brown and orange.
“My tired legs have been telling me that I’m really in training camp,” Frye
said with a laugh.
QUICK HITS
Boyer Returns: LB and special team leader Brant Boyer was back in pads for
the first time in over a year. He was injured early last season and Butch Davis
put him on injured reserve forcing him to sit out the entire season. Boyer had
been nursing a toe injury.
“It felt good to put the pads on,” he said. “It’s always an adjustment to get
back out there. It will take a few practices to get my rhythm back.”
McCutcheon Sits: CB Daylon McCutcheon was held out of practice again
suffering from headaches. CB Gary Baxter was back in action.
Down Goes (the ball) Fraser: Rookie DL Simon Fraser batted down a pass during
the 11-on-11 scrimmage. The 6-6 undrafted free agent from Ohio State was
notorious for getting his hands on balls in college.
“It’s a technique I’ve worked on a lot,” he said. “If I can’t get to the
quarterback I try to obscure his vision and disrupt his throwing motion.”
Big Play Antonio: WR Antonio Bryant continues to be the favorite target of QB
Trent Dilfer. The pair hooked up on a pair of touchdown passes. One was similar
to Sunday’s where the play was for about 50 yards and he beat the defender by
five to six yards. The other was in the end zone over Michael Grant for
25-yards. Dilfer threw a perfect strike to Bryant.
No Braylon: WR Braylon Edwards missed his fifth day of training camp, but
WOIO-19 reported that a deal was getting closer between the Browns and Edwards.
