The news isn’t promising for Browns receiver Andre Davis, who injured his
right big toe against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Davis’ foot was in a walking cast Wednesday, and he didn’t participate in
practice.
The signing of Frisman Jackson to the active roster indicates that Davis
might not play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Davis put up an optimistic front and said that he plans to play.
“I have confidence in the guys that we have in our whole receiving corps,”
Davis said.
“Just for me personally, I just want to get out there because I’m a
competitor. I’m doing multiple rehabilitation sessions to make sure I can get
back out there.”
The injury comes at a bad time for the Browns. With Antonio Bryant in the
early stages of learning the offensive system after being acquired in a trade
with Dallas on Tuesday, the offense could lack firepower at the wideout spots.
Dennis Northcutt and Andre King should log more time.
“The major thing is for him (Bryant) to learn,” quarterback Jeff Garcia said.
“He has so much he’s going to have to take on. I know physically that the skills
are there. We’ll try to help him as much as possible. I’ll work with him after
practice when I have the opportunities.”
Coach Butch Davis likes what he’s seen of Bryant’s ability to pick up the
terminology.
“I don’t want to put the cart before the horse, but he went home and studied
the playbook and met with (receivers coach) Fred Graves all last night,” Davis
said.
“He came out here (in practice) and stood next to Fred, and in 7-on-7 he
pretty much knew all the coverages and all the plays. He missed just two (of
18). That was pretty good for the first day.”
JUST ANOTHER PLAYER: Garcia isn’t sure how he’s going to react when he sees
former teammate Terrell Owens on the field prior to Sunday’s game.
“I’m not going to say what I’m going to do or not going to do,” Garcia said.
“I’m going to approach it like I do every other game. I’m going to go out and
warm up and be focused on my job. I don’t seek out any individuals on the other
team. I don’t do that for any team, and I’m not going to do that for this team.”
LONG HISTORY: Bryant grew up in the Miami area and was recruited by Davis
when the latter was at the University of Miami.
Bryant ended up attending the University of Pittsburgh, where he won the Fred
Biletnikoff Award in 2001. The award goes to college football’s top receiver.
WALKING WOUNDED: Guard Kelvin Garmon continues to have a headache. Garmon
suffered a concussion when he was kicked in the head against the Bengals, but he
returned to the game. Garmon was unconscious on the field for a short period of
time.
Linebacker Barry Gardner (groin) won’t play against the Eagles. Andre Davis
and Garmon (concussion and quadriceps) are questionable.
ROSTER MOVES: The Browns signed receiver Frisman Jackson and offensive
tackle Javiar Collins to the active roster. Jackson had been on the Browns’
practice squad. He’s been with the team since 2002 and has played in 12 games.
Collins played in 11 games as a backup for the Dallas Cowboys the last three
seasons. The Cowboys traded Collins to the Carolina Panthers Aug. 25. The
Panthers waived him during training camp. To make room on the roster, kick
returner Dee Brown and offensive lineman Bo Lacy were waived.
