Chaun Thompson's bid to earn a starting job at outside linebacker in his second pro season took a hit Wednesday when he learned he fractured a carpal bone in his left wrist.
Surgery to insert a pin in the bone is scheduled for Thursday morning at the Cleveland Clinic.
"He will be out for this weekend with Buffalo and the scrimmages, and more than likely he will miss next week," said Browns coach Butch Davis. "He can run, but they don't want him to have any contact with it. They want that pin to set. After that, it will be up to our medical, people day-to-day, week-by-week ... Right now there is no ballpark guess as to exactly when, but they are optimistic he will be back for the last two preseason games, full speed."
Thompson broke the bone when he hit a teammates helmet earlier this week. He continued to practice wearing a soft cast through Tuesday. The fracture was discovered Wednesday after he complained of soreness in the wrist.
