BEREA – Receiver Frisman Jackson has trimmed down 10 pounds, and it’s paying off.
Jackson was admittedly slow and not in the flow of things during the
mini-camp and quarterback-school workouts. He told coaches that he wanted to trim down in an attempt to increase his speed.
The mission was accomplished. Jackson checked in to camp at 215 pounds. He showed off his increase in speed by turning a short pass over the middle into a 70-yard play during a recent practice.
“ I feel lighter, and it’s helping,” Jackson said. “Everyone is saying how quick I am. If the defensive guys are seeing it, it must be true.”
Jackson played in seven games in his rookie season, primarily on special teams. He suffered an ankle injury during the 2003 off-season and missed the first 11 games of last season.
Quincy Morgan, Andre Davis and Dennis Northcutt are the top three receivers. Jackson could be the fourth receiver at the start of the season.
“I want to get 50 catches,” Jackson said. “I have only three catches in two
years. I want this to be my breakout year.”
QUIET STORM UPDATE: Defensive end Courtney Brown didn’t practice for a second staright day, although he was in uniform. Brown has a sore knee from Sunday’s practice. He said it’s minor and that he should be ready to go when the Browns and Buffalo Bills practice Friday and scrimmage Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.
“I feel good, and I feel confident,” Brown said. “I’m looking forward to getting out there.”
CAMP NOTES: Punters Derrick Frost and Ryan Dutton will get a better indication as to which one is leading the battle to be the starter during practice against the Buffalo Bills in Rochester. One of the drills will have the punters of both teams facing a rush.
Both punters have been effective in getting off punts with good hang time. Coach Butch Davis said that the average hang times for both have been in the high 4.3s to low 4.5s.
Receiver Andre Davis, who has what’s been called a slight ankle sprain, did some light running Tuesday but didn’t participate in team drills. Coach Butch Davis thinks that Andre could return to the practice field Wednesday.
Cornerback Leigh Bodden intercepted a Kelly Holcomb pass intended for C.J. Jones. Bodden went high into the air to break up the pass. He gained control of the ball as he landed on the ground.
Running back Lee Suggs got into the end zone twice with the first team on goal-line drills.
