Courtney Brown - who had two sacks, two pressures, one forced fumble and one recovered fumble – was named by the NFL as the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Browns 33-13 win at Pittsburgh last Sunday. The win marked the largest margin of victory in an away game for the Browns since a 41-14 win over the Los Angeles Rams on December 12, 1993. It also marked the Steelers worst home loss since a 37-7 defeat in their 1997 season opener to Dallas. Brown was previously named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after totaling three sacks and three pressures in a 23-20 home win over Pittsburgh on September 17, 2000. Seven Browns have been awarded a player-of-the-week honor by the NFL since Cleveland returned to the NFL in 1999, and Brown is the only player to receive the recognition twice.
Linebacker Earl Holmes was the most recent Brown to earn player of the week honors. Holmes was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week after posting 11 tackles (eight solo) along with a crucial goal-line stop of RB-Warrick Dunn on 4th-goal at the Cleveland 1 with 0:23 remaining in the Browns’ 24-16 win over Atlanta on December 29, 2002. Wide receiver Andre’ Davis was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after returning four kickoffs for 168 yards, including a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, in the Browns 34-17 win against Houston on October 20, 2002. Quarterback Tim Couch was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after totaling career-highs in completions (36) and attempts (50), tying a career-best with three TDs and posting his second-highest yardage total (326) in the Browns’ 31-28 overtime win at Tennessee on September 22, 2002.
Defensive Back Anthony Henry was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week (11/18/01 at Baltimore) and kicker Phil Dawson was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week (9/30/01 at Jacksonville) in 2001. Defensive Linemen Keith McKenzie (9/10/00 at Cincinnati) and Brown (9/17/00 vs. Pittsburgh) were honored as the AFC Defensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks during the 2000 season.
