After losing Massaquoi and Cribbs, the Browns added a veteran wide receiver Monday, signing David Nelson on a one-year deal.

There is a saying that it’s better late than never. The Browns hope that is true.

It took about a month but the Browns finally added a veteran wide receiver to their receiving corps via free agency. After letting Mohamed Massaquoi and Josh Cribbs leave through free agency, the Browns had not added any player with NFL experience.

However, on Monday, the Browns announced that they had signed David Nelson to a one-year contract.

Nelson, 26, played with the Bills the past three seasons, where he caught 94 passes for 1,042 yards with eight touchdowns. In 2011, he was second on the Bills with 61 receptions for 658 yards, including five touchdowns. Nelson missed all but one game in 2012 after tearing his ACL in the season opener against the Jets.

“David possesses very good size and hands, and has a good feel for the game,” said Rob Chudzinski. “He showed promise with Buffalo two years ago before missing most of last season with an injury, and we feel as though he will be a good addition to our group of wide receivers.”

Nelson (6-foot-5, 214 pounds) originally was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Bills in 2010 from Florida. He has appeared in 32 games with 17 starts.

Nelson is the first wide receiver added since Chudzinski and Mike Lombardi took control of the Browns roster. Nelson joins Jordan Norwood, Greg Little, Josh Gordon, Travis Benjamin and Josh Cooper as the current receivers on the team.
