Roll with the Punches

Yes, Trestman has spent the last five years in the Canadian Football League. During those five years, the Montreal Alouettes won the Grey Cup in 2010 and 2009, but his experience isn’t limited to the CFL.

As the Cleveland Browns continue searching for a new head coach, the amount of candidates increases by the day. That, combined with Chip Kelly returning to Oregon, has opened the team up for a new round of criticizing and jokes from those locally and nationally.

Sometimes laughing eases the pain.

I’m all for a snarky comment here or there at the Browns expense. Hey, if they’re not going to give me winning football, at least allow me to get some laughs.

There are times where the jokes, after hearing them over and over, get old. The latest has to do with one of the Browns’ candidates, Marc Trestman.

Yes, Trestman has spent the last five years in the Canadian Football League. During those five years, the Montreal Alouettes won the Grey Cup in 2010 and 2009, but his experience isn’t limited to the CFL.

He broke into the NFL in 1985 as the Minnesota Vikings running backs coach and from there bounced from NFL team to NFL team, including a stint in Cleveland from 1988-89 as the team’s quarterback coach and then offensive coordinator. For his time working with offenses, he’s become known as an “offensive guru.”

Trestman may be a current CFL coach, but this guy knows football. In 2009, CBS’ Clark Judge wrote that Trestman deserves a job as a head coach in the NFL.

“Trestman is not on anyone's radar in the NFL because, well, because there's this idea that he's bright and innovative and pieces together a nice passing game and all that, but that he really isn't cut out to be a head coach. He's too nice or too docile or too cerebral or just not head-coaching material, whatever that means.

“Anyway, nobody is talking about him as a head-coaching prospect in the NFL, and that's a mistake. Because in two seasons Trestman has proven that they should be; that his critics were wrong and that he does, indeed, have what it takes to be a head coach.

“The bottom line, of course, is can he be successful -- and I'd say we have our answer. But I know what you're thinking. It's the CFL. What makes you think he can do it in the NFL? I don't know. But what I do know is that he should at least be given a chance ... and I don't see that happening anytime soon. Too bad, too, because NFL owners are always looking for the next Marv Levy, and maybe, just maybe, the next Marv Levy is back in Montreal.”

Save me the jokes about the Browns potentially hiring a CFL coach. This guy has the chops to do the job and, possibly, do it well.

It is very reminiscent of when the news broke that Jimmy Haslam was going to purchase the Browns. The ensuing narrative was that a Steelers fan was buying the Browns.

Of course. A very Browns thing.

After some quick sleuthing and came across the interview in which Haslam said he became a Steelers fan only after he admitted to before being a Colts fan because of Peyton Manning. The only reason he was a Steelers fan was because owned a piece of the team.

If Trestman is the guy, you’ll have to face the barrage of jokes that are surely to follow. When someone, especially not a Browns fan, wants to chide you about the Browns being so desperate they hired a CFL coach, the Browns and their fans may just have the last laugh.
