Pat Shurmur said he wasn’t a big fan of Twitter during training camp and it doesn’t appear he will be any more excited with social media anytime soon.
The Browns and NFL teams didn’t have to turn in their roster moves to the league until Friday night at 9 p.m., but the Browns didn’t announce their moves until 11:36 p.m., but thanks to Twitter and players’ agents, at least half of the player’s names of those released came out early Friday afternoon. The Browns made 22 moves to get to the final 53-man roster.
Scott Fujita was placed on the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner for his role in the Saints Bounty scandal and is scheduled to miss the first three games. Fujita has held out hope that his suspension will be overturned as he is awaiting a ruling by a federal judge on his appeal.
For the Browns, the biggest names were those of quarterback Seneca Wallace and tight end Evan Moore. Wallace was in a battle to be the backup to rookie Brandon Weeden, but after a good performance in the preseason finale against the Bears was given his release according to Fox Sports Ohio’s Pat McManamon. Wallace threw a touchdown pass to Rod Windsor on his final pass against the Bears. Ironically, Windsor was also released. Wallace was due to make nearly $2.4 million this season.
Moore seems to have been replaced by Jordan Cameron in the rotation. He started training camp on the non-football injury list and ran with the fourth team through most of camp. Wallace and Moore had their contracts terminated.
The following players were also released: TE Dan Gronkowski, DB James Dockery, DL Ronnie Cameron, DL William Green, OL Jarrod Shaw, DL Brian Schaefering, Ben Jacobs ,WR Josh Cooper, RB Adonis Thomas, OL Jeff Shugarts, OL Stanley Daniels, OL Garth Gerhart, OL Dominic Alford and DL Ernest Owusu, FB Brad Smelley, LB Quinton Spears and DL Kiante Tripp.
The Browns also traded DB David Sims to the Eagles for a conditional 2013 draft pick.
The Browns can add up to eight players to the practice squad. Shaw, Ronnie Cameron and Cooper said they are candidates to join the Browns practice squad. The practice squad will be announced Saturday.
The Browns kept 13 rookies on the final 53-man roster, including nine 2012 draft choices. The only draftees not on the final roster are Smelley (7th round) and LB Emmanuel Acho, who was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. DB Tashaun Gipson, DB Johnson Bademosi and LB L.J. Fort all made the team as undrafted rookie free agents.
