Steelers cut quarterback Troy Smith

The Pittsburgh Steelers cut former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Troy Smith today, a transaction that doesn't have much of an impact on their roster. Smith was signed to a reserve/future contract by the Steelers in January. The former Ohio State star was out of the NFL last season, playing for the Omaha Nighthawks in the United Football League.

He last played in the NFL two years ago when he was on the San Francisco 49ers roster. Smith is a former Baltimore Ravens fifth-round draft pick. A five-year NFL veteran, Smith has played in 20 games with eight career starts.

Smith has completed just 51.7 percent of his throws for 1,734 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions for a 78.5 quarterback rating. He has fumbled nine times, losing two.

Relatively undersized at 6-foot, 217 pounds, Smith has above-average mobility and some playmaking skills.

However, he hasn't proven himself worthy of a starting job in the NFL following an excellent college career for the Buckeyes.
