BEREA, Ohio—After trading down from the 67th slot, the Browns selected defensive tackle John Hughes from Cincinnati. The Browns obtained the 87th pick used to nab Hughes and an extra fourth round pick (120th overall) with the Broncos.
Hughes is the first player the Browns have drafted on the defensive side of the ball. The 6-3, 306 pound is expected to help against the run.
"I'm more of a run (stopper) guy," Hughes said. "That's my strong suit."
Heckert agreed with Hughes' assessment.
"He's more of a stack and shed guy," Heckert said.
Heckert said the Browns would've taken Hughes at 67, but thought they would be able to get him at 87 and pick up an extra fourth-round pick.
"There were some guys that we thought would be there for us in the fourth round and the fourth round is stacking up pretty well for us," Heckert said. "John is a big, powerful, tough guy. He'll come in here and compete. "
Hughes said he expected to be picked on Saturday, but is happy to be taken in the third round.
"I thought more like the fourth round," Hughes said. "I invited my family over to watch the draft on Saturday, but we'll still get together and celebrate."
Hughes had 51 tackles last season at Cincinnati with 12.5 tackles for a loss with five sacks. He totaled 141 tackles in his four-year career with nine sacks.
