Team confirms Mack to Pro Bowl
Don Delco on January 24th, 2011 AT 2:07 PM

As we reported on The OBR earlier today, Browns center Alex Mack will be heading west to Hawaii this weekend for the NFL Pro Bowl. Below is the official release from the team.

Cleveland Browns center Alex Mack has been named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, the league announced today. Mack replaces New York Jets center Nick Mangold who could not participate due to injury.

“I’m very excited to be able to go to Hawaii," Mack said. "It’s unfortunate that Nick had to get injured for me to go, but I’m looking forward to representing the Browns. It has been a lifelong dream for me and from here on, it’s working to make many more. I’m excited to be going and I can’t wait to play in this game.”

Mack has not missed an offensive snap since joining the Browns as the 21st overall selection of the 2009 NFL Draft. In 2010, he was part of an offensive line that paved the way for five individual 100-yard rushing performances and a running game that averaged 4.0 yards per rush attempt.

He is one of six Browns centers to earn Pro Bowl honors and the first since Tom DeLeone in 1981. Mack will be joined in Hawaii by teammate Joe Thomas, who was voted a starter at tackle. For the first time since the 1981 Pro Bowl, the Browns will have at least two offensive linemen at the annual all-star game. That year, guard Joe DeLamielleure, DeLeone and tackle Doug Dieken all represented the Browns.

Mack Is Deserving of Pro Bowl Spot
Dave Kolonich on January 24th, 2011 AT 12:50 PM

In some encouraging news for Browns' fans, two-fifths of the team's offensive line will be on display during next weekend's Pro Bowl.

Mack Named to Pro Bowl

While Mack's Pro Bowl nod – the first of his career – comes as an injury replacement for Steeler rookie center Maurkice Pouncey, the recognition is much deserved.  And no, this isn't a reaction against the Steelers again finding themselves playing for a Super Bowl championship, but rather an acknowledgement of Mack's play during 2010.

In particular, Mack's best five games of the season came against some the league's most dominant defensive tackles.  Mack held his own against Pittsburgh's Casey Hampton earlier in the season, then dominated New England's Vince Wilfork and Jacksonville's Terrance Knighton.  Down the stretch of what became a lost season, Mack overpowered both Buffalo's Kyle Edwards and Baltimore's Haloti Ngata.

While the Pro Bowl is mainly a celebration of high profile teams and players, game tape doesn't lie.  Pouncey struggled throughout much of the season, yet was named to the Pro Bowl based on the Steelers' historically strong offensive line.

On the other hand, Mack earned his spot.
