Browns second-year receiver, Mohamed Massaquoi, expects a big second-half

BEREA, Ohio — The play of the wide receivers has been underwhelming in the first half of the season. Mohamed Massaquoi, who had a good rookie season, has just nine catches for 115 yards through seven games. His biggest play was a 41-yard touchdown in the season opener against Tampa Bay. He suffered a concussion in the first half against the Steelers and did not play against New Orleans.

Massaquoi is looking to pick it up after the bye.

“Looking at this point in the season, I definitely wish that my production would be a little bit better,” Massaquoi said. “But, I’m going to go back and look at some of the things that I can do to better myself to try to have a bigger second half and try to learn from the little things that didn’t go so right in the first half. Just try to get on the same page with everybody and make sure I can do some things differently to be as productive as possible in the second part of the season.”

Right Side Shuffle: Mangini said the reason Billy Yates started over rookie Shawn Lauvao in the Saints game was not because Lauvao was still recovering from his high ankle sprain.

“No, it wasn’t physical,” Mangini said. “Billy had a better week of practice and played better. Shawn has to establish that it should be his job. Any guy who is fighting for playing time has to do that in practice and we thought Billy did the better job in practice.”

Floyd Womack was moved from guard to tackle to replace Tony Pashos and John St. Clair.

“He did well,” Mangini said. “One of the things I like about Floyd is he’s versatile. He’s consistent in all areas. Things don’t faze him. He’s really a reliable guy.”

Hardesty Update: Montario Hardesty spoke in the locker room on Wednesday for the first time since having his right ACL repaired about five weeks ago.

”My rehab is going well,” he said. “The timetable is all mapped out and my progress is going well.”

Hardesty expects to be ready for the start of training camp in 2011.

Winning Formula: Mangini said the success of the Browns in the second half of the season will come down to two things:

“That’s going to depend on us doing two things consistently well,” Mangini said. “Not getting costly penalties and not turning the ball over. When we do that consistently, we will be good. We’ve made some strides in that area, but you can’t beat yourselves.”

Bye, Bye: The Browns are off until Monday. Peyton Hillis was heading to Arkansas and going deer hunting, as is Joe Thomas in Wisconsin. Joe Haden was going to his home in Maryland and just relaxing. Colt McCoy was headed back to Austin, Texas where his No. 12 jersey was being retired. Josh Cribbs was having his No. 9 jersey retired Saturday by Kent State.

Little Goblins: Mangini shared a story about one of his kids’ teachers saying to one of the boys after the win over the Saints, she said ‘What a great weekend and Jake said, ‘Yeah, I went to the zoo.”

Mangini said his three young boys are going to be dressed up for Halloween. One will be the Shadow, one Scooby Doo and one Buzz Lightyear.
